Desmopressin, a synthetic polypeptide structurally related to arginine vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone), the natural human posterior pituitary hormone, elicits a greater antidiuretic response, on a weight basis, than does arginine vasopressin, and, among other pharmacologic effects, causes a dose-dependent increase in plasma factor VIII (antihemophilic factor) activity.
