TIGECYCLINE (tigecycline)

Drug overview for TIGECYCLINE (tigecycline):

Generic name: TIGECYCLINE (TYE-ge-SYE-kleen)
Drug class: Tetracyclines
Therapeutic class: Anti-Infective Agents

Tigecycline, a synthetic derivative of minocycline, is a glycylcycline antibiotic.

Tigecycline is used for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, community-acquired pneumonia, and complicated skin and skin structure infections caused by certain susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Because a higher incidence of all-cause mortality has been reported in patients receiving tigecycline compared with those receiving comparator anti-infectives, tigecycline should be reserved for use in situations when alternative anti-infectives are not suitable. (See Increased Mortality under Warnings/Precautions: Warnings, in Cautions.) Prior to initiation of tigecycline, appropriate specimens should be obtained for identification of the causative organism and in vitro susceptibility testing. Tigecycline may be initiated as empiric monotherapy pending results of these tests.
