Paroxetine, a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), is an antidepressant agent.

Paroxetine is commercially available in the US as paroxetine hydrochloride and paroxetine mesylate. Paroxetine hydrochloride conventional tablets and oral suspension are used in the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Paroxetine hydrochloride extended-release tablets are used in the treatment of major depressive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Paroxetine mesylate capsules are used to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS) associated with menopause; they are not indicated for the treatment of any psychiatric condition, because they contain lower dosages of paroxetine than those used to treat psychiatric disorders. In addition, paroxetine has been used in the treatment of premature ejaculation+ and depression associated with bipolar disorder+ .
