Adverse effects occurring in patients receiving prussian blue include constipation and GI distress. Blue discoloration of sweat and tears has been reported in patients receiving long-term therapy with prussian blue.

The following precautions are available for RADIOGARDASE (prussian blue (insoluble)):

Prussian blue (insoluble) is used for the treatment of known or suspected internal contamination with radioactive cesium and/or radioactive or nonradioactive thallium in pediatric patients 2 years of age or older. Safety and efficacy and dosage recommendations for prussian blue in pediatric patients have been extrapolated from experience in adults and supported by experience in pediatric patients (4-12 years of age) who received prussian blue for the treatment of heavy internal contamination with 137Cs in a 1987 incident in Brazil. In that incident, the rate of elimination of radioactivity in pediatric patients receiving prussian blue in a dosage of 1 g 3 times daily was similar to the rate in adults receiving prussian blue 3 g 3 times daily.

Children 2-4 years of age are expected to have biliary and GI function comparable to that of a 4-year-old child. There are variations in the developmental maturity of the biliary system and GI tract of infants younger than 2 years of age; dosing recommendations have not been established for neonates or infants (i.e., pediatric patients younger than 2 years of age).

Prussian blue is unlikely to distribute into breast milk. Because cesium and thallium are distributed into human breast milk, women contaminated with these metals should not breast-feed infants.
